John Locke was an English philosopher from the late 1600's who believed people have natural rights. He believed that a governments sole purpose is to protect the rights of the people. His theory of natural rights means that people have a right to life, liberty, and property. He believed that all people are born equal and are have these rights. This is in contrast to divine right monarchy because in that theory, only the King has natural rights.The purpose of government was to protect the people's rights and to maintain social order. The people and their rights should be protected by the government. If a government does not meet the needs of the people, they have the right to overthrow the government and install one that does. This foreshadows a series of revolutions that will take place in multiple countries to overthrow absolute monarchs and replace them with democracies.
